What a great first day back! We had a wonderful day downtown at the Municipal Building as we spent our first day at City Hall School!!
Thank you to Ms. Stephanie, Ms. Tara, Ms. Noelle and Mr. Nelson for supporting us on our first day! We are so grateful for your support!! Some of our highlights included: Getting set up with our lockers, getting reacquainted with Ms. Sheila and learning some of the basic expectations of working in a building that is shared with more than 2000 employees! We were able to join a short portion of a council meeting to get started with our day! We were welcomed by one of the members of council (sorry- I can't remember his name) and we were invited to stand and be on the closed circuit cameras! The meeting today was looking at whether or not council will be passing a bill to ban the use of cannabis in public places. This committee was being lead by Councillor Dianne Colley-Urquhart who was an RN for many years before joining the municipal government. We talked about how old we thought someone should be if they wanted to be a councillor (oldest and youngest) and why someone might be interested in representing their ward. Next we walked to the Famous Five statues (which is our muster point) and we learned that the artist wanted to put a secret message on each of the five statues to remember people very important to them. Ask me who was special to the artist and where we found their names. Next we met with Amber Stewart who use to be our School Trustee in Parkland and now is a Neighborhood/Partnership Coordinator for Legacy and Parkland. She talked about Neighbor Day (June 16th) as well as about the types community and how communities are based on people. We wondered what the story of the community of Parkland School would be in 20 years. We had some playtime outside before having a 30 minute Q & A with Councillor Demong (who is the councillor for ward 14. The students impressed Councillor Demong with all of their great questions and even told them about an essay writing contest he holds for all grade 6's in the area he represents! We finished the day with some sketching of an artifact :) Did I mention we rode a city bus to and from our classroom?! Have a wonderful night everyone!

This is Luke’s mom - Luke couldn’t stop talking about what a great day he had at City Hall. He’s very excited to see what the rest of the week brings.
