FYI:
Field trip forms went home 2 days ago for Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump (June 7th)- please have them returned asap :) It is important to note (as stated in the email) that the bus will be pulling away at 730am sharp. Please have your son/daughter at the school by 7:10am. Bike to School Day is on June 6th! A map/notice went home today indicated the meeting points/times that children can be dropped off at in order to participate in the event. There will be parent volunteers to meet and ride with the students to school that day :) We have really been enjoying the outdoors! We had our phys. ed boot camp/games outdoors today in addition to working on our scripts for our literacy group work! In math today, we worked on using arrays to find some possible factors of a number when given the product and used our knowledge of area to create number sentences. We read the introduction of Auggie and Me today as well as to finish up working on the animal teachings that we feel we embody based on traditional FN teachings. The students also spent some time on their mapping assignments and enjoyed their music class. Have a great night!

Field trip forms went home yesterday for Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump (June 7th)- please have them returned asap :) It is important to note (as stated in the email) that the bus will be pulling away at 730am sharp. Please have your son/daughter at the school by 7:10am. Fun lunch tomorrow! (Thanks to Carys for volunteering to help!) We have been working on some lots over the past two days! In math, we are continuing to look at the concept of multiplication (and it's relationship to division) through different methods. We most recently looked at creating arrays on a Cartesian plane and looking at the concept of area and perimeter of squares and rectangles as we explore this tool. In social, the students have been working on their mapping assignments that have asked them to explore resources, services and goods in their assigned area. This concept is also being explored the notion of working within different base systems...ask me what I know about the base 10 and base 5 system! *Note* please feel free to work on fluency of multiplication facts with your son or daughter; this can be done on the way to school by simply looking at license plates numbers (choosing two and multiplying them together). In addition, we have started to look at some FNMI teachings around the seven sacred animals which have allowed us to draw comparisons to ourselves in the process. The students have been making last minute changes and finishing up their stories in ELA in addition to working on scripts that are based on their guided reading novel as a part of our outdoor challenges. In art, we are working on developing a character to represent ourselves in a second yearbook which has been inspired by the work of Mr. Mike! These are a lot of work as we explore how to sketch like an artist; providing multiple sketches and ideas as we start to make our final selections. We finished our novel, The Hobbit, and will soon begin Auggie and Me which is the second novel to the book Wonder. In Phys. Ed., we have wrapped our fun unit in basketball (although we will still practice some of the skills we've learned in scrimmages) and have started to work on some bootcamp exercises as a part of our gym class. I hope everyone had a wonderful night with their family! FYI:
Volunteer Tea: May 26th Sorry our blog didn't post on Thursday! We spent the entire day completing various learning missions outside! We started with our phys. ed lesson and it went from there! From landscaping modeled after our province, to making our faces look weird and following an insect, we had an amazing day using the outdoors as a space for learning. Our student of the week was named and it was *insert drum roll here* Zayne!! Way to go!! Today, we started the morning reflecting on what we now know about multiplication before going outside for our phys. ed block. We practiced chest, bounce and overhead passes before trying out a three man weave! Afterwards, we scrimmaged with the grade 3s vs. the grade 4s which allowed us to practice student-to-student defense. Next we stayed outside for snack and then for a literacy activity. Students were asked to pick a scene from their current novel study and write a short script; using the outdoors as their setting. After recess, we spent some time reading the Hobbit and had a sharing circle to share some highlights from the long weekend! Afterwards, students had another 15 minutes to work on their scripts before the lunch bell rang. After lunch, we had some silent reading time before going outside to collect some materials for an art project we are working on. We finished the day with power hour! Have a great night everyone!! FYI
Fun lunch: May 31st (Opa) Outdoor School Day Challenge: May 18th PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th Please ensure your son/daughter has warm outdoor clothes tomorrow and are prepared for the weather as we will be outside for most of the day tomorrow :) Over the last two days, we have continued working on our basketball dribbling and shooting skills; adding in lay-ups and having a focus on dribbling the ball with control, using both hands and keeping our eyes up. We have also moved into our multiplication/division unit; discussing strategies and working on mental math skills to support us in finding solutions to problems. In our social studies classes, we have been working on a text-quest as we have been researching the energy types, services and completing a mapping assignment that asks us to look at the different resources in our province of AB as well as the global communities. We have been completing outdoor challenges and are preparing for the outdoor classroom day tomorrow! We are looking forward to using alternative settings to learn in! Many students are excelling in the recorder program! There are a few students that need to spend a bit more time practicing their recorder...ask me if I am one of those students! We have also been spending time in our literacy groups in our novel studies. Have an amazing night! FYI
Fun lunch: May 31st (Opa) Outdoor School Day Challenge: May 18th PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th Fish Creek: May 30th? Student of the week was Jacob! He has been working very hard on his peer skills and ensuring he picks a space that works for him in the classroom :) Today we started a new unit in Phys. Ed. (basketball) and we focused on some dribbling skills and shooting skills before having a short scrimmage. Afterwards, we had a sharing circle where we had the privilege of seeing some incredible work by Bridget's Grandma! Bridget brought in a handmade shawl used in pow wow dancing! This lead into our discussion about an entry into the Orange Shirt contest which recognizes the Truth and Reconciliation movement in our country. After recess, we spent some time on 10 monkeys and duolingo before working on some of our research. In the afternoon, we met in our literacy groups before music and then had our outdoor challenge in the last hour. The grade 3's and 4's had different projects attached to their science curriculum- ask them about it :) Have a great night everyone!! FYI
Fun lunches: May 10th and 31st (Extreme Pita and Opa) Scientist in the classroom: May 12th (am) PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th We started our day with PE/an outdoor challenge where the students took on a new and fun mission! The students were challenged to create a mustache out of various things in nature and then have a simple conversation without being able to use a list of "w" words. We continued to work on our energy types/services research in social studies and later began crafting some letters for our teacher next year. The students worked on their art projects this afternoon and then had power hour! Seems like only a few words, but we certainly had a day filled with activities! Have a great night :) It looks like our Friday blog posted did not post but the important news from that blog was...
Alexis was named student of the week! Thank you Alexis for caring so much about our classroom and always offering to help wherever you can! She also is always on task and has a wonderful growth mindset in our learning. FYI Fun lunches: May 10th and 31st (Extreme Pita and Opa) Scientist in the classroom: May 12th (am) PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th Today we started our first Bocci Ball lesson in PE and it was SO much fun! We also started some buddy research on the types of energy in AB (gr. 4) and looked into some of the public services available in the global communities (gr. 3) in our visual journals using concept mapping. We spent a bit of time on 10 monkeys today and 15 minutes on Duolingo before working on our story writing projects/research! In music, although a few students were a bit chatty, we had a student get the final belt (multi-colored) for recorders! Way to go Ray!! To end our day, we worked on an art project and we went outside to enjoy the weather and the outdoors for the last 15 minutes! Have a wonderful night everyone! FYI
Fun lunches: May 10th and 31st (Extreme Pita and Opa) Scientist in the classroom: May 12th (am) PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th The grade 3s and 4s have been continuing with our outdoor missions over the past two days! These have included a listening to nature activity and an art activity with our buddy class. We have been building up our stamina and ability to adapt our learning to the outdoors and have been enjoying the challenges! We have also been working on our addition and subtraction with decimals with our marathon month problem. Most of us are on the last step- where we will need to create a scenario of possible distances per day for the last week of the month based on our calculations of miles run. During our social blocks, we have been working between our research project and creating our timeline for our recipes. Did we mention we had library and buddies? Not to mention a surprise fire drill at lunch! We have also been reading our novel during class time and have put in some work in our visual journals. Some of it was related to the Hobbit while other work has been related to some artifacts! Hope everyone has a great night! FYI
Fun lunches: May 10th and 31st (Extreme Pita and Opa) Scientist in the classroom: May 12th (am) PD No School: May 19th Victoria Day- No School: May 22nd Volunteer Tea: May 26th Our big change this week was the announcement of our class participating in the Outdoor Classroom Day on May 18th! We will join thousands of students around the world as we learn and discover in an alternative classroom and use our ability to explore and play in nature. This has lead us into our first two outdoor missions over the past two days and has allowed us to get comfortable completing tasks without being surrounded by the walls of the classroom. Ask me about the missions we have been working on! In Phys. Ed we have continued to work on skipping skills in addition to enjoying scrimmages in soccer and basketball; not to mention a grade 3 vs 4 dodgeball game! We had a few challenges in math! One asked us to write down a three digit number, reverse it and subtract and then reverse the solution and add to prove that the final solution would be either 1089 or 198. We are also looking at addition and subtraction of decimal numbers. We have discussed the relationship between decimal numbers and fractions, talked about different ways to represent different operations and the ways in which a decimal solution works depending on our operation. We have started to solve a word problem that asks the students to use running distances (to the thousandths place) in miles in a multi-step problem. In addition to that, we also started a logic problem with wildebeests and lions that Ray shared via TED-Ed. In our social/culture projects, students have been identifying traditional recipes, ingredients and the process for cooking their chosen dishes. They will begin working on their timelines and before you know it- we will be enjoying some delicious foods! The assembly yesterday afternoon was amazing! The students loved having The Show Company dance and perform for us not to mention the incredible performances by Leaving Thomas and some by our very own students at P.o.W.! We enjoyed power hour today- students had an opportunity to share some of the things they learned/did in their option. It was pretty neat to see the handmade Harry Potter wand from Bridget this morning and the picture Jacob had taken with the Hamilton brothers! We had a great start to our week and we are looking forward to more adventures and learning tomorrow :) |
