Today was a great end to our first week back in the classroom! We spent 30 minutes practicing our multiplication skills on 10 monkeys and then we were able to use 10 minutes of our earned time before going to PE. In PE today we had two student volunteers to teach the class some of the basics of lacrosse! Thank you to Jarrett and Tristan for sharing your knowledge and skills with us :) They showed us how to cradle and how to catch and pass the ball! We had music! We partnered back up with our social studies partner to find out more about Tunisia! We are soon going to share some interesting facts with our classmates with a short google slide. Congratulations to Luke for earning student of the week! Thank you to Tristan for being able to take Finuffy home for the weekend.

Remember to read everyday for at least 20-30 minutes!
Today we: Went on 10 monkeys to practice multiplication. We met at the carpet to have a snack and go over the expectations in our jigsaw project for Tunisia :) Then we got into groups and started our research on our assigned topic. We listened to a story and then we worked on our City Hall pages in our visual journals. We had library! We had DEAR time and had some catch up time to finish our adventure maps, 3-2-1's and anything else that was not done. We played a hockey game in our jerseys to remember the players, coaches, trainers and bus driver of the Humboldt hockey team. We reviewed day 3 and day 4 of City Hall School Over the past two days we have been... Logging on to 10 monkeys to practice our multiplication skills :) We had an hour in music on Tuesday and we had music again on Wednesday! We have been looking at the climate and land features of Tunisia. Ms. Very took the time to read some information on Tunisia and together we practiced what it meant to summarize (vs copy) and how we decide what is important information. After completing our research notes, we were then tasked with creating a visual representation of what we might pack in our suitcase if we were taking a trip to Tunisia; considering the weather and landscape. We reviewed what we did on our second day at City Hall school and created an adventure map in our journals. We are going to be working on a 3-2-1 for day 2 where we will write/draw three things that we learned, two things that surprised us and one question we could ask Amber Steward and Councillor Demong. We have been working on different multiplication strategies (arrays, groups, skip counting and repeated addition) in math. We have been playing multiplication games with partners. We have been playing different team sports in PE as we have the gym to ourselves! We played basketball on Tuesday and capture the chicken on Wednesday. Ms. Very's adviser came in and watched her teach :) Ms. Very is doing VERY awesome in our class and we are all so happy she is here :) We know you are all excited to hear all about the week at City Hall School- but we are in the process of brainstorming and will share our thoughts this week...please stay tuned!
Today we... Reflected on day one of City Hall School :) We created an adventure map in our journals after having a classroom discussion where we all shared something we did or something that stood out to us! In order to help us create a map that shared the adventures and the learning- we did a walk to view other student work and to seek feedback about our own adventure maps. We talked about story beginnings and why it is important to consider the person reading your story as you begin to write. We talked about 4 different strategies for starting stories: sound, dialogue, thoughts or worries...and I know there was one more...who can tell your parents what it was?? Next we went on a scavenger hunt to find how different authors have started stories! We were then challenged to write a short story beginning for all four strategies (2-3 sentences) We had a circle :) We had some DEAR time. Afterwards, we used what we had learned to write a story beginning inspired from one event at City Hall (day one). Next, we partnered up and shared our story with our partner- again, seeking feedback that helps move our learning forward. In PE- as we have the gym to ourselves, we are going to have a week of intramurals!! Today we played soccer :) Afterwards, we logged into our 10monkeys accounts (mathematics challenge) but there are no home hours and we learned that it isn't available after 2pm (weird right?!) so we played some demo questions with addition, subtraction and multiplication. What a great first day back! We had a wonderful day downtown at the Municipal Building as we spent our first day at City Hall School!!
Thank you to Ms. Stephanie, Ms. Tara, Ms. Noelle and Mr. Nelson for supporting us on our first day! We are so grateful for your support!! Some of our highlights included: Getting set up with our lockers, getting reacquainted with Ms. Sheila and learning some of the basic expectations of working in a building that is shared with more than 2000 employees! We were able to join a short portion of a council meeting to get started with our day! We were welcomed by one of the members of council (sorry- I can't remember his name) and we were invited to stand and be on the closed circuit cameras! The meeting today was looking at whether or not council will be passing a bill to ban the use of cannabis in public places. This committee was being lead by Councillor Dianne Colley-Urquhart who was an RN for many years before joining the municipal government. We talked about how old we thought someone should be if they wanted to be a councillor (oldest and youngest) and why someone might be interested in representing their ward. Next we walked to the Famous Five statues (which is our muster point) and we learned that the artist wanted to put a secret message on each of the five statues to remember people very important to them. Ask me who was special to the artist and where we found their names. Next we met with Amber Stewart who use to be our School Trustee in Parkland and now is a Neighborhood/Partnership Coordinator for Legacy and Parkland. She talked about Neighbor Day (June 16th) as well as about the types community and how communities are based on people. We wondered what the story of the community of Parkland School would be in 20 years. We had some playtime outside before having a 30 minute Q & A with Councillor Demong (who is the councillor for ward 14. The students impressed Councillor Demong with all of their great questions and even told them about an essay writing contest he holds for all grade 6's in the area he represents! We finished the day with some sketching of an artifact :) Did I mention we rode a city bus to and from our classroom?! Have a wonderful night everyone! Important dates:

If you were wondering some of the things we did to finish up our week...they included: Drawing a leprechaun, designing a trap and writing about how we thought it might help us to catch a leprechaun. Selecting materials for our build, building our traps and decorating them in a way that might entice a leprechaun. We created pages in our visual journal to share about our experiences at the Glenbow museum! We created a stormy art piece using mixed mediums! We had a fun health lesson that looked at speech bubbles and thought bubbles. We introduced more information about bridges and Tunisia! Today we: Created misty art pieces! We worked on our Glenbow pages! We read some Harry Potter! We went over the expectations for our bridge pages in our visual journals, completed a sketch, labelled a bridge and found critical facts about the bridge our group choose. Some of us were even able to start building the bridge with K'nex pieces. We had some DEAR time and then had a little bit more time to finish up our bridge page and/or build. We spent the majority of the afternoon in the gym where we practiced for our concert! Field trip forms for City Hall will be going home tomorrow! Important dates:

We have been working with our buddy classes on a routine for the concert and a Robert Munsch reader's theatre. We went snowshoeing! There were some of us that wondered if the snowshoes would keep us on top of the snow but we soon discovered that was not the purpose of the snowshoe. We had Ms. Joy come in for an author's visit! We learned how she gets her ideas, how she maps out her stories and ways that she seeks feedback to help her improve her writing (such as asking other authors and avid readers what part of her book might be boring!). We had some time to play a math game online and as a class, we learned that we were solving equations with missing parts...and that is actually related to algebra!! Pretty cool huh?! We have also been working on our math board game project and our budgeting project :) We had some time researching on Friday with Ms. Very. We have been looking at Google Earth and a couple of short videos of a drone flying through Tunisia to get some initial ideas about our new country! We saw the set of where Star Wars was filmed today! We have been working on our performance in music! We started a new sacred teaching: the teaching of truth! We talked about some of our stops on our adventure map, had some time to add colors and worked on a journal entry. We've also worked on our handwriting. We are talking about structures, shapes and stability. We watched a Bill Nye video and used that to start talking about important features of structures. Ask me 3 things that I learned! We had music! We finished our science builds and did our final testing! Our shapes with triangles held the most weight! We read from Harry Potter and started drawing Hermione :) Afterwards, we tested any structures that were altered due to mixed shapes. We had DEAR time and then talked about what it means to have someone observing you while you perform a skill. Students were able to relate to Ms. Very as many of them have evaluations for sports such as dance or hockey. Ms. Barb came in to watch Ms. Very teach both math and PE this afternoon. We talked about regrouping when there are zeros for placeholders and we have all started a budgeting project to design a bedroom with a $1000 limit. This will allow us to practice addition and subtraction in a real-life situation :) In PE, we had some different level racket challenges! Afterwards, we continued working on our math projects. Have a great night everyone! Important dates:

Highlights from our day: We started our day reading a newsletter from City Hall School that asked us to think about whether we think Calgary should make a bid for the 2026 Olympics, whether we would want to compete in a future olympics or if we would want to volunteer/work at a venue if the Olympics were to come to Calgary in 2016. Ask me something I learned from the article. Thank you to Ms. Shelia for keeping us engaged as we await our time at City Hall School :) After responding to our journal prompt from the newsletter, we were given some time to improve and finish up our Harry Potter writing prompt. We reviewed the importance and intention behind feedback and then had another author's chair. Thank you to Rachel, Gavin and Tristan for sharing their writing with us today. It was too cold to go out at recess so our grade 6 buddies played a new story game with us. After recess, we had a snack before listening to Ms. Very read from our novel study. Afterwards, we had a group conversation about some of the things we know about Ron Weasley, before working in our visual journals. Some of us had about 15 minutes to go through our checklist of things needing to be finished. After lunch, we had a short DEAR time before having circle. We reviewed triple digit addition and subtraction with Ms. Very. Some of us also continued/started some work designing a dream bedroom on a $1000 budget to apply what we know about addition and subtraction. In PE, we worked on our racket skills in Tennis! Afterwards, we continued working in our math tasks. |
